For the class of 2028 and beyond in Wichita Public Schools, the minimum requirement for a credit-based diploma is 23 credits. There are 16.5 units of credit required for the classes of 2028 and beyond to graduate. Those credits include, 3.5 units of credit in English, 0.5 units of credit in communications, 3.0 units of credit in Social Studies, 3.0 units of credit Mathematics, 3.0 units of credit in natural science, 0.5 unit of credit in Physical Education, 0.5 unit of credit in Health Foundations, 1.0 unit of credit in Fine Arts, 0.5 unit of credit in Financial Literacy, 1.0 unit of credit in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM). In addition, 6.5 units of elective credit must be earned.
The classes of 2028 and beyond, will need to take, English 1, English 2, English 3, English 4. The optional classes they can take are, English Literature, World Literature, Modern Literature, Multicultural Literature, Women’s Literature, English Composition, and Professional Literature & Writing can be taken for 0.5 units of credit in English.
The required classes for that 2.0 units of credit for Social Studies are World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government which are required. The optional classes for the last 1.0 units of credit are Geography, Economics, Sociology, and Psychology.
The classes available for the 3.0 credits needed for Mathematics are, Foundations of Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Math Applications, Algebra 2, Algebra 3, Pre-Calculus, or AP Math Courses which you can take for college credits.
The Science classes that they can take are Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Astronomy, Biology, Earth/Space Science, Geology, Global/Enviornmental studies, Human Body Structures and Functions, Physical Science, Physics, & Zoology for that 3.0 units of credit required in science.
If they want to take classes that go into more depth on the subject, they can take honor classes. The classes available are, Honors English 1-4, Honors Algebra 2, Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors U.S. History 1-2, and Honors World History.
They are also able to take AP courses which are courses for college credit. The AP classes available are, AP Language, AP Literature, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP U.S. History
The 1.0 unit of credit needed in Fine Arts can be obtained by taking, Introduction to Drawing and Design, Principles of Illustration, Graphic Design, Photo Imaging, Essentials of Interior and Textile Design. The classes that can only be taken if that teacher sees you are good at are Web Page Design, Digital Media Project Management, Work-based Experience – Digital Media Project Management, & Work-based Experience – Media Tech.
The classes students can take to obtain 0.5 unit of credit in communications are, Debate, Forensics, Speech, Drama, Professional Communications, 21st Century Journalism, Business Communications, Media and Public Relations, or Public Speaking.
Lastly the classes of 2028 and beyond need 6.5 elective credits in order to graduate. To specify on what an elective is, it is a class you pick by choice and take whether it is a semester long class or if it is a yearlong class.
