Transcript:
You’re listening to the first installment of the West Word series New Frontiers, about the importance of getting involved. This episode, Aubrey Winegarner talks about her experience doing women’s wrestling.
Winegarner:
I started wrestling because the women’s wrestling coach asked me to, so I gave it a shot and ended up loving it. The thing that I love about wrestling is being able to be on the mat and not having to worry about my teammates. I just like being on the mat, just me and my opponent. One moment that sticks out with me is going one and two at regionals, making me not qualify for state and ending my season, which made me more motivated to get better and go to state next year.
Wrestling has affected me by giving me something to do and not just going home and sitting on my phone. It’s also giving me motivation to get better and stronger so I can perform as good as I can at meets. Getting involved has impacted my relationship with the school by being more interested in showing pride and having more connections and better communication with people and coaches by gaining more confidence in wrestling and myself in general.
